Lagos State Politics appears to be taking a dangerous turn. Just when Lagosians were celebrating the removal of Mudashiru Obasa the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly by 32 members of the House stories are beginning to emerge about a plot to reinstall him as Speaker.

The plan is to remove the first female Speaker Mojisola Ojora -Meranda  or ask her to resign and replace her with Obasa or Adedamola Richard Kasunmu representing Ikeja Constituency  2 who is believed to be a relative of the President and likely to be a more compliant male alternative.

Sources say Lagos State Governor HE Mr Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu may also be forced to resign or be impeached as a fall out of this crisis once a new leadership is in place at the House of Assembly.

There are strong indications that these moves are coming from hard liners within Presidency who believe that the removal of Obasa and change of LAHA leadership was done without the President’s approval.

The hardliners have fingered the Governor, key Governor's Advisory Council, GAC members,  former National Assembly members , key members of LAHA and several political leaders across the State as the arrowheads of the plot that removed the former Speaker.

Obasa is accused of misappropriating LAHA funds, disrespect to the Governor and party elders, high handedness, bullying of lawmakers, amongst several infractions.

Womenfolk all over the State have celebrated Meranda’s election as the first female Speaker of LAHA in the history of Lagos State and have hailed Party stakeholders for allowing this to happen. They say it represents a recognition of women’s contribution to the ruling Party in the State and vowed to defend any attempt to remove her.

Opposition parties in the State are watching unfolding events with keen interest hoping to cash in on the crisis in the ruling party ahead of the upcoming Local Government elections in the State.

Political observers have stated that this crisis could serve as a catalyst for the opposition who are closing ranks to challenge the Presidents re-election plans in 2027.

The President lost the presidential elections to Peter Obi in 2023 and will be hoping to reverse this trend in the richest and most populous State in the Country. How he manages this crisis will be very critical to his re-election fortunes analysts say.
