Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have formally briefed the Governance Advisory Committee (GAC), the apex political body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, regarding the recent leadership change in the Assembly. The meeting, held at Lagos House, Marina, was attended by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, lawmakers, and party leaders.

Lawmakers Share Experiences Under Former Speaker

During the meeting, several lawmakers recounted their experiences under the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who was impeached earlier this week. One legislator revealed a harrowing ordeal, stating that Obasa’s alleged maltreatment nearly drove him to suicide.

“For daring to contest the seat of Speaker against Obasa after the election, I nearly committed suicide due to the way I was treated. None of my colleagues in the House dared to communicate or relate with me during Obasa’s reign—nobody dared to greet me nor respond to my greeting. I was ostracized. If not for the people I am representing, I would have run away from the House,” Hon Tobun reportedly shared.

GAC Endorses Leadership Change

Following the briefing, the GAC endorsed the leadership change. The new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, who previously served as Deputy Speaker, addressed journalists after the meeting, expressing gratitude for the support and unity within the Assembly.

“We specifically sought the blessings of the GAC and our fellow lawmakers. We are united in moving the Assembly forward and ensuring the progress of Lagos State,” Meranda stated.

Historic Election of First Female Speaker

The Conference 57 of Local Government and Local Council Development Area Chairmen has congratulated Meranda on her historic election as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. In a statement signed by the group’s Chairman, Alabi Kolade David, and Public Relations Officer, Olusesan Daini, the council chairmen commended Meranda’s dedication, competence, and commitment to service.

The group also pledged their support and collaboration with the new Speaker to ensure a successful tenure.

This leadership change marks a significant milestone for the Lagos State House of Assembly, signaling a new chapter of progress and collaboration aimed at advancing the interests of the state and its citizens.
