LAND DEFICIT: LAGOS DEVELOPS EIGHT NEW ISLANDS

 

Eighth new islands are underway in Lagos State to create waterfront estates and man-made Islands, as well as more lands and new housing schemes for development to bridge the housing deficit in the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Yacoob Alebiosu, disclosed this during the ongoing media press briefing to mark the first year of the second term of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

He said that in the development of the waterfront estates/man-made Islands, the ministry would ensure a balance between economic development and preservation of waterfront shoreline from erosion, including preventing adverse changes to the ecological system by regulating and monitoring dredging and reclamation work in private and public waterfront schemes.

The commissioner said: “The following under-listed proposed Islands /estates have been approved by the governor for reclamation work. However, the proponents are still perfecting their documentation and payments.”

He listed the approved Islands/estates by the governor to include Aishasul Island, Xavier Properties Limited, Cowrie Shore and Palava Yard.

Alebiosu further said that the Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration had set the pace for making Lagos a 21st Century Economy that everybody is eager to be part of.

He said that the ministry is also processing the governor’s approval for Gold Island, King’s Kid Island, Seagulf Island and Marlot Eagle Island.

The commissioner, who said that the ministry had commenced the deployment of drones to capture the boundaries and adjoining details of all waterfront schemes and Public Private Partnership (PPP) schemes to produce images for geospatial information, said that the schemes already captured include Eko Atlantic City, Amuwo-Odofin Waterfront Scheme and Okun Ajah Waterfront Scheme.

Alebiosu said the ministry had clamped down on illegal jetty operations at the Ijegun-Egba axis, ordering the operators to down tools and vacate the vicinity.
