Philip Shaibu has strongly criticized his impeachment as the Edo State Deputy Governor, branding it as both unlawful and a menacing encroachment on the nation's democratic values.
Speaking out against the decision in a video shared on his official platform, Shaibu denounced the process, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and his unwavering stance against what he perceives as an infringement on democratic principles.
Shaibu articulated, "It is with a heavy heart yet a resolute spirit that I come before you to address the recent events that have unfolded within our dear state.
"I denounce in the strongest terms the illegal impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly over trumped-up charges; this is not just an attack on me as an individual but on the very democratic principles that we hold dear.
"It’s a dangerous descent into dictatorship, a threat to the foundation of our democracy. Let it be clear that this impeachment was hatched because of my ambition to contest the Edo Governorship election 2024 under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP."
The impeachment of the embattled deputy governor follows the adoption of the investigative panel's report by the Edo State House of Assembly.
The panel, comprising seven members, was tasked with probing allegations of misconduct leveled against Shaibu, ultimately leading to the impeachment proceedings and his subsequent removal from office.
A quick recap reveals that the investigative panel concluded its proceedings without the presence of Shaibu or his legal representation, prompting the submission of the panel's report to the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa.
The Chairman of the seven-man panel, Justine Stephen A. Omonuwa (Rtd), had earlier conveyed the court's decision to adjourn for the final time, illustrating the panel's commitment to affording Shaibu an opportunity to address the allegations against him.
Notably, Shaibu and his counsel were absent during the proceedings, leading to the panel's subsequent actions.
In an attempt to assert his legal position, Shaibu's representation, Professor Oladoyin Awoyale (SAN), made a stand at the inaugural panel sitting, citing a pending court case as grounds for his non-participation in the proceedings. Despite this objection, the panel proceeded with its activities, prompting Awoyale to seek permission to withdraw from further engagement with the panel.
