IBADAN BOMB BLAST: ILLEGAL MINERS RESPONSIBLE

Explosive devices stored by illegal miners have been identified as the cause of the recent explosion in the Bodija Area of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, according to Governor Seyi Makinde.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, resulted in the tragic death of at least three individuals, over 70 others hospitalized. The blast also affected prominent locations such as the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Oyo State House of Assembly, and several residential areas.

Governor Makinde, who personally visited the scene on Tuesday night, assured that thorough investigations were underway to determine those responsible. Preliminary findings from security agencies implicated illegal miners occupying a residence in Bodija, where explosive devices were stored.

Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, Governor Makinde stated, “Preliminary investigations by the security agencies revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices there which caused the blast. The investigations are ongoing. All those found culpable for this will be brought to book.”

Contrary to earlier reports of 10 fatalities, the governor clarified that two people lost their lives, while 77 others sustained injuries. He expressed condolences, saying, “In total, we have 77 injured victims so far, most of whom were treated and discharged, and two fatalities. May their souls rest in peace and may God give their loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”

Governor Makinde assured that the government would cover the medical expenses of the victims and provide support for those whose homes were affected. Rescue operations were promptly initiated, with various resources deployed to the scene, including earth-moving equipment, ambulances, and security personnel.

Addressing residents, the governor urged calmness and cooperation with emergency services. He said, “I urge all residents to please call 615 for any emergencies they may be experiencing at this time and to remain calm and stay away from the immediate scene of the incident to allow rescue operations to be carried out without interference.”
