ALIMOSHO: A WARD IN 1945 LGA CREATION - OGUNWUYI

My findings on the historical context surrounding the creation of Alimosho LGA

By Rotimi Ogunwuyi

The claim that Alimosho Local Government Area (LGA) was created in 1945 is partially accurate, but requires some historical context and clarification.

Before 1945, the area now covered by Alimosho LGA belonged to various traditional and administrative units within the Western Region of Nigeria. These included Egbaland, Awori Kingdom, and Ikeja Division.

1945 Local Government Ordinance:  In 1945, the Local Government Ordinance was enacted in Nigeria, introducing a system of elected local councils. This led to the creation of numerous Local Government Areas (LGAs) across the country.

Ikeja Division Council: While Alimosho wasn't established as a distinct LGA in 1945, its territory fell within the jurisdiction of the Ikeja Division Council, one of the first LGAs established under the 1945 ordinance.

1953 Ikeja District Council: In 1953, the Ikeja Division Council was reorganized into several smaller units, including the Ikeja District Council. This council had authority over some of the areas that now make up Alimosho LGA.

1976 Local Government Reform:-The major turning point came in 1976 with the nationwide local government reform. This reform led to the creation of the Alimosho Local Government Area as a distinct entity, separate from the Ikeja District Council.

While Alimosho itself wasn't established in 1945, the historical context around the introduction of local governments in Nigeria that year is significant. The 1945 ordinance laid the foundation for the structure within which Alimosho would later be created.

1976: Officially, Alimosho LGA came into existence as a distinct administrative unit in 1976 through the nationwide local government reform.

So, while it's not entirely accurate to say Alimosho was "created" in 1945, it's understandable why some sources associate it with that year due to the broader historical context of local government development in Nigeria. The key takeaway is that Alimosho became a distinct LGA in its current form in 1976, building upon the foundation laid by the 1945 local government reforms.
